Lesson 1 - The Grades of Heralds


The lowest ranked heralds are Pursuivants. These are minor heralds, apprentice to more experienced men. The next rank is that of Herald. These are the men who supervise the Pursuivants as well as serving their masters, whether independent noble or the crown, to the best of their ability. Finally there are the Kings of Arms. These men are the chief heralds of the realm, responsible for overseeing all matters relating to heraldry and its use.


Lesson 2 - General Terminology


Blazon - To describe a coat of arms using heraldic terms. The field is always described first, followed by any charges.

Emblazon - To draw or paint a coat of arms from a blazon

Charge - The images on the arms.

Field - The background of a coat of arms.

Armigerous - An armiger is a person entitled to use a coat of arms. Such a person is said to be armigerous
